Youth Camps
Optis
Optis are small single person sailboats perfect for young beginners.
Teras are the newest boats to our fleet. They are more adaptable to different size kids and a little faster than the optis. Made of rotomolded plastic (like most kayaks these days) they are very durable for running into each other or docks. The rig is very similar to other boats so new sailors will be able to transition their knowledge faster.
RS Teras
FJs
FJs are two person boats with two sails. They are a lot more powerful and quick than the other boats so they need bigger sailors. These boats are fiberglass so they are very strong, but require care when operating near docks and other boats.
What do I need to bring to class?
A Type-III US Coast Guard approved life jacket, closed-toe shoes, a sack lunch, reusable water bottle, towel, change of clothes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a good attitude! These details and more will be sent out in a reminder prior to the first day of class.
What class should I sign up for?
Camps are currently by age group. If you are still unsure which class is right for you or your sailor, please contact our Camp Coordinator oakharboryouthsailing@gmail.com
What financial aid is available?
OHYS is investing in getting as many kids on the water as possible. If you’re in need of reduced tuition, please contact us at oakharboryouthsailing@gmail.com to request a scholarship from our program.
For additional assistance: Healthy Island Youth Initiative (HIYI) is providing scholarships to help Island County youth take part in summer camps such as ours.
Who can attend Open Sail Nights?
In order to be cleared for Open Sail Night, a sailor must prove that they can rig, sail, and de-rig their boat without assistance. Sailors must also fill out a separate waiver to participate in Open Sail Night. If you or your sailor would like to attend Open Sail Night, but you are not sure if they have been cleared to sail, please contact us to double check.
Do you guys offer adult classes?
We do! We offer a series of private lessons for adults. This allows for more scheduling flexibility and means we can really focus our time spent in person to hands-on sailing experience.
